U Thein Sein
President
Republic of the Union of Burma

Date 17, April 2011

Subject: A Request for the Implementation of Measures that Would Lead to National Reconciliation and Peace and Tranquility in the Republic of the Union of Burma

Mr. President,
We sincerely desire national reconciliation and peace and tranquility in the Republic of the Union of Burma. We would like to submit to you and the newly formed cabinet that unlike the usual run of elected bodies, the present administration cannot confine itself merely to development works for the country during its five year tenure. The new cabinet must discharge the grave responsibility of
opening a new page in the history of the country by firmly establishing a genuine democratic system.

The people are looking to you and your cabinet to fulfill this duty satisfactorily.

We desire the new administration to demonstrate its magnanimity and positive attitude and to prove its commitment to democratic practices by the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience; by the speedy institution of conditions under which Burmese individuals and organizations at present taking refuge overseas can return to our country in comfort and security; and by the resolution of political issues, including problems relating to armed ethnic
groups, through dialogue and negotiation.

We desire, Mr.President, that you and your cabinet should strive for the promotion of essential democratic principles and practices. Genuine national reconciliation and peace talks with armed ethnic groups constitute the best single means whereby the true benefit of the people could be realized. The people long for a cease-fire agreement between the Tatmadaw and armed ethnic groups and for the peaceful solution of political problems through meaningful dialogue.

Therefore as an initial step towards a negotiated settlement that would lead to national reconciliation, we would request the government to release intantly and unconditionally all prisoners of conscience; to declare immediately a cease-fire between the Tatmadaw and armed
ethnic groups; to resolve political conflict through dialogue; and to create conditions that would enable individuals living as refugees in various countries abroad to come back to Burma in comfort and security.

Fatal Accident A259 Nutbourne, Chichester

This morning a cyclist was killed on the A259 Nutbourne.  The road will be closed for most of the day while police investigate.   Local residents have witnessed numerous accidents on this road,  the A259 between Southbourne and Chidham, most involving speeding or overtaking vehicles.  Today, many drivers were more concerned with getting to their destination and had little thought for a family soon to hear news that a loved one had been killed – killed on a stretch of road that should be30mph and not 40mph.  How many more people will lose their life before Chichester County  Council take note of local residents and reduce the speed limit?

This is a residential road, with access to homes, rural business, a petrol garage, Nutbourne Caravans, The Beijing Palace Restaurant, Caravan Park, Southbourne Surgery, The Travellers Joy, Southbourne Farm Shop and other local business.  It is a coastal village with access to the harbour, enjoyed by local people with their dogs, children, families, retired residents as well as visiting holiday makers.  There are too many accidents and too many ‘near misses’ on this stretch of road – and today a life has been lost.

More about this story at Chichester News on Gail Ward Photography.

Note: Wednesday 15th June Chichester Council PR rang to let me know that they are not responsible for highways/speed limit.

It’s all orange for easyjet’s 200th Airbus

easyjet launched it’s latest A320 in full colour today. The orange A320 was on show in France and is the 200th to join the easyjet fleet. During the ceremony, easyjet’s CEO, Carolyn McCall said “We aim to turn Europe orange and the special livery on our 200th aircraft embodies that ambition.”

easyjet has also published plans to become the first airline to follow environmental requirements for new short haul aircraft. Details are contained in a press release issued today.

Trip down memory lane

On Monday I joined a BBC crew from Manchester who were filming with Melvyn Bragg for ‘Reel of Britain’ at Bristol Airport. The day was a ‘real’ trip down memory lane, chatting about my experiences overseas during the the package holiday boom of the late 1970′s. The highlight of the day was watching archive film footage in a  lovingly restored 1960′s mobile cinema bus.  Regardless of whether I will be edited in or out,  the day was great fun and I thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing  with other ‘holidaymakers’, ‘holiday reps’ and the crew. The programme will go out on BBC 2 in September 2011.  (Nicely timed to coincide with Gail’s book about the Travel Industry!)

Cultural Activities – EU Budget

In July, the European Commission starts to discuss how much it will spend on culture in the next EU budget.  The result will impact everyone in Europe as our Governments and Policy Makers will be influenced by this decision.  Cultural activities are an integral part of our lives, and we cannot let the EU reduce the spend as this will directly affect the UK - have your say by signing the manifesto.
